Pancreatin is a preparation derived from mammalian pancreas, containing enzymes that aid in the digestion of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. It is designed to disintegrate in the alkaline medium of the duodenum, releasing active enzymes to facilitate digestion. A-Zyme is indicated for conditions associated with pancreatic insufficiency, such as chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, following partial or complete pancreatectomy, total gastrectomy, steatorrhea, somatostatinoma, and celiac disease. The recommended dosage is 2–3 tablets to be swallowed whole with a little water immediately after or during meals, or as directed by a physician. Patients should be cautious when using A-Zyme concurrently with antacids, as alkaline media may rupture the enteric coating. Common side effects include gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. A-Zyme is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug.
