Folix 15 mg is a folinic acid tablet manufactured by ACME Laboratories Ltd., primarily used to treat megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency and to counteract the toxic effects of folic acid antagonists like methotrexate. Each tablet contains 15 mg of folinic acid, which is the active metabolite of folic acid. Folinic acid is involved in the synthesis of nucleic acids and amino acids, making it essential for DNA replication and cell division. In cases of folic acid antagonist overdose, folinic acid acts as a rescue agent by bypassing the metabolic block caused by the antagonist, thereby mitigating its toxic effects. The recommended dosage varies depending on the condition being treated: for folic acid antagonist toxicity, 15 mg every 6 hours for 10 doses; for megaloblastic anemia, 5–15 mg daily. Folix 15 mg should be administered under medical supervision, especially in pediatric patients, as its safety and efficacy in children have not been established. Common side effects may include mucositis, stomatitis, leukopenia, and diarrhea. It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to folinic acid or its components and should not be used in pernicious anemia or other megaloblastic anemias where vitamin B12 is deficient. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should use folinic acid only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus or infant. Folix 15 mg should be stored below 30°C, away from light, and out of reach of children.
