Maxima MUPS 20 mg is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) manufactured by ACME Laboratories Ltd., containing 20 mg of esomeprazole magnesium trihydrate. Esomeprazole works by inhibiting the H⁺/K⁺ ATPase enzyme system (proton pump) in the stomach lining, thereby reducing gastric acid secretion. This action helps alleviate symptoms and promote healing in conditions associated with excessive stomach acid. Maxima MUPS is indicated for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, peptic ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and as part of combination therapy for Helicobacter pylori eradication. The recommended dosage for adults with GERD without erosive esophagitis is 20 mg once daily for 4 weeks; for erosive esophagitis, 20–40 mg once daily for 4–8 weeks; and for maintenance, 20 mg once daily. In combination therapy for H. pylori eradication, esomeprazole is typically administered with amoxicillin and clarithromycin for 10 days. Common side effects include headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and dry mouth. Esomeprazole should be used with caution in patients with severe liver impairment, and the dose should not exceed 20 mg daily in such cases. It is also advised to avoid long-term use without medical supervision due to potential risks of bone fractures and magnesium deficiency.
