Gavisus 200 ml is an over-the-counter antacid suspension manufactured by ACME Laboratories Ltd., commonly used to provide symptomatic relief from conditions like gastric reflux, heartburn, indigestion, and flatulence associated with gastric reflux. The active ingredients—Sodium Alginate (500 mg), Sodium Bicarbonate (267 mg), and Calcium Carbonate (160 mg) per 10 ml—work synergistically to alleviate discomfort. Upon ingestion, the combination of Sodium Alginate and Sodium Bicarbonate reacts with stomach acid to form a protective gel-like raft with a near-neutral pH. This raft floats on the stomach contents, effectively preventing gastro-esophageal reflux for up to 4 hours. Calcium Carbonate further neutralizes excess stomach acid, providing rapid relief from indigestion and heartburn. This physical mode of action does not rely on absorption into the systemic circulation. Gavisus is typically taken after meals and at bedtime, with dosage varying based on age: adults and children over 12 years can take 10–20 ml, while children aged 6 to 12 years should take 5–10 ml. It is not recommended for children under 6 years. Common side effects may include constipation, flatulence, and stomach cramps. Gavisus is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding when clinically necessary.
