Type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults to improve blood sugar control
As monotherapy or in combination with metformin, sulfonylureas, or insulin
Pharmacology:
Linagliptin is a DPP-4 (dipeptidyl peptidase-4) inhibitor. It increases incretin hormone levels (GLP-1 and GIP), which enhance insulin secretion and suppress glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent manner, thereby reducing blood glucose levels without causing hypoglycemia.
Dosage & Administration:
Usual dose: 5 mg once daily
Can be taken with or without food
No dose adjustment needed in renal or hepatic impairment
Take at the same time each day for best results
Interaction:
May enhance hypoglycemia when used with sulfonylureas or insulin
Rifampin may reduce the efficacy of Linagliptin
Minimal interaction with other commonly used antidiabetics
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Linagliptin or any component of the formulation
Not recommended for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis
Side Effects:
Common: Nasopharyngitis, cough, headache
Less common: Hypoglycemia (especially when combined with insulin), back pain

Use with caution in patients with a history of pancreatitis
Therapeutic Class:
DPP-4 (Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4) Inhibitor
Storage Conditions:
