Indications:
Coralex DX is indicated for the symptomatic relief of cough associated with the common cold, bronchitis, respiratory tract infections, and conditions involving excessive mucus production and chest congestion.
Pharmacology:
Guaifenesin is an expectorant that increases the volume and reduces the viscosity of secretions in the trachea and bronchi, facilitating mucus removal by coughing.
Dextromethorphan HBr is a non-opioid antitussive that acts on the cough center in the medulla to suppress coughing without affecting respiration.
Dosage & Administration:
Adults and children over 12 years: 1 capsule (Guaifenesin 600 mg + Dextromethorphan 40 mg) every 12 hours, not to exceed 2 doses in 24 hours.
Children under 12 years: Use only under physician supervision.
Capsules should be swallowed whole with water, not crushed or chewed.
Interaction:
May interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), antidepressants (SSRIs), sedatives, alcohol, and CNS depressants. Increased risk of serotonin syndrome when used with serotonergic drugs.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of the components. Not recommended for use in patients taking MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of stopping them.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Rarely, may cause allergic reactions or serotonin syndrome in high doses or drug interactions.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Should be used only if clearly needed and prescribed by a physician.
Precautions & Warnings:
Avoid alcohol or other CNS depressants while taking this medication. Caution in patients with asthma, chronic bronchitis, or other respiratory conditions. Do not exceed recommended dose.
