Description
Glifo-M 12.5 mg/500 mg is a fixed-dose combination tablet manufactured by ACME Laboratories Ltd., combining two antidiabetic agents: Empagliflozin and Metformin Hydrochloride. Empagliflozin is a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor that works by reducing glucose reabsorption in the kidneys, leading to increased glucose excretion in urine and thereby lowering blood glucose levels. Metformin, a biguanide, decreases hepatic glucose production, reduces intestinal glucose absorption, and improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. This combination is indicated for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control. It is particularly useful in patients inadequately controlled on Metformin alone or those already on separate tablets of Empagliflozin and Metformin. The recommended dosage is typically twice daily with meals to minimize gastrointestinal side effects, with the maximum daily doses being 25 mg of Empagliflozin and 2000 mg of Metformin. Patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) below 45 mL/min/1.73 m² should not use this combination. Common side effects include urinary tract infections, genital infections, nausea, and diarrhea.
