Description
Brivaracetam is an anticonvulsant medication primarily used to treat partial-onset seizures in patients aged 4 years and older. It functions by selectively binding to synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A) in the brain, a mechanism thought to contribute to its anticonvulsant effects. Brivaracetam is typically administered orally, with or without food, and may be used as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy. The initial recommended dosage for adults is 50 mg twice daily, which can be adjusted based on individual response and tolerability. For pediatric patients, dosing is weight-dependent, with specific guidelines provided for different weight categories. Common side effects include somnolence, dizziness, fatigue, and gastrointestinal disturbances. As with other antiepileptic drugs, there is a potential risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior, and patients should be monitored accordingly. Brivaracetam should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus, and its use during breastfeeding is not well-studied.
