Indications:
FOLIX is indicated for:
Treatment and prevention of megaloblastic anemia due to folic acid deficiency
Prevention of neural tube defects in pregnancy
Folate deficiency in malnutrition, alcoholism, liver disease
Supportive treatment in patients receiving methotrexate or phenytoin
Pharmacology:
Folic acid (Vitamin B9) is a water-soluble B-vitamin essential for nucleoprotein synthesis and maintenance of normal erythropoiesis (red blood cell formation). It is converted into tetrahydrofolate, which is vital for DNA and RNA synthesis.
Dosage & Administration:
Adults (Anemia or Deficiency): 5 mg once daily or as directed
Pregnancy (Prevention of Neural Tube Defects): Usually 400 mcg–5 mg daily, starting before conception through the first trimester
Can be taken with or without food
Interaction:
May interact with methotrexate, trimethoprim, and certain anticonvulsants (e.g., phenytoin)
Zinc absorption may be reduced with long-term use
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to folic acid
Undiagnosed anemia without proper investigation (e.g., pernicious anemia)
Side Effects:
Generally well tolerated. Rarely:
Gastrointestinal discomfort (nausea, bloating)
Allergic reactions (rash, itching)
Sleep disturbances with high doses
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Safe and recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding under medical supervision.
Precautions & Warnings:
Should not be used to treat anemia of unknown cause
High doses may mask vitamin B12 deficiency, leading to neurological damage
Regular monitoring recommended in long-term therapy
