Description
Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic that belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of medications. It works by inhibiting the action of bacterial enzymes called DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are critical for the bacteria's DNA replication and cell division. This interference prevents the bacteria from multiplying and spreading, allowing the body’s immune system to control and eliminate the infection. Ciprofloxacin is commonly used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including those of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, and gastrointestinal system. It can be administered orally, intravenously, or in topical forms such as eye and ear drops, depending on the infection being treated. It is effective against a wide range of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. However, it is not suitable for all types of infections and is typically prescribed when other antibiotics may not be effective.
