Description
Duocard 5 mg is a brand name for cilnidipine, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker used primarily to manage hypertension (high blood pressure). It works by inhibiting calcium influx through both L-type and N-type voltage-dependent calcium channels. This dual action leads to vasodilation and reduced sympathetic nervous system activity, effectively lowering blood pressure. Cilnidipine is particularly beneficial in patients with chronic kidney disease, diabetes, or albuminuria, as it may offer additional protective effects on the kidneys and cardiovascular system.
The typical adult dosage is 5–10 mg once daily after breakfast, with a maximum of 20 mg per day. Elderly patients may require a lower starting dose due to increased sensitivity to hypotension.
Common side effects include dizziness, flushing, headache, hypotension, peripheral edema, palpitations, gastrointestinal disturbances, increased micturition frequency, lethargy, eye pain, and depression.
