Description
Lifitegrast is a medication primarily used to treat dry eye disease (also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca). It is an integrin antagonist that works by reducing inflammation in the eye. Lifitegrast targets the LFA-1 (lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1) receptor on immune cells and prevents these cells from binding to the ICAM-1 (intercellular adhesion molecule-1) receptor, which is responsible for the inflammatory process in the eyes. By inhibiting this interaction, Lifitegrast helps reduce the symptoms of dry eye, such as discomfort, irritation, and sensitivity to light.
