Indications:
Cycloplegia for refraction in children
Uveitis and iritis (to relieve pain and prevent synechiae)
Pupil dilation before eye examination or surgery
Pharmacology:
Atropine sulfate is a potent antimuscarinic agent that blocks the responses of the iris sphincter muscle and ciliary body to cholinergic stimulation. This results in pupil dilation (mydriasis) and paralysis of accommodation (cycloplegia).
Dosage:
Apply a small amount of ointment (around 1 cm) inside the lower eyelid 1–2 times daily or as directed by an ophthalmologist.
Administration:
Ophthalmic use only
Apply carefully inside the conjunctival sac
Wash hands before and after use
Avoid touching the tip to any surface, including the eye
Interaction:
Enhanced effect with other anticholinergic drugs
May interfere with glaucoma medications
Contraindications:
Known hypersensitivity to atropine
Narrow-angle glaucoma
Untreated ocular hypertension
Side Effects:
Blurred vision
Eye irritation, redness
Increased intraocular pressure
Systemic absorption in children may cause dryness of mouth, flushed skin, or confusion
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed and prescribed by an ophthalmologist
Use caution during lactation
Precautions & Warnings:
Use with caution in children and elderly
Do not drive or operate machinery after use due to visual disturbances
Monitor intraocular pressure during prolonged use
