Pharmacology:
Coenzyme Q10, also known as Ubidecarenone, is a fat-soluble substance present in every cell of the body. It acts as a vital intermediate in the electron transport chain within the mitochondrial membrane for cellular respiration and ATP production. The highest concentrations are found in metabolically active tissues such as the heart, immune system, skeletal muscles, and gingiva. As Ubidecarenone is lipophilic, it is absorbed more efficiently when taken with a meal containing fats.
Dosage & Administration:
General Use:
30 mg to 200 mg daily, divided into 1–3 doses, depending on the specific condition and physician's recommendation.
Note:
It is recommended to take the supplement with a meal to enhance absorption.
Interaction:
Statins:
Statin drugs reduce endogenous synthesis of Ubidecarenone in the body. Supplementation may help restore Ubidecarenone levels without adversely affecting statin efficacy.
Warfarin:
CoQ10 may reduce the effectiveness of warfarin.
Beta-blockers:
Beta blockers, particularly propranolol, may inhibit some Ubidecarenone-dependent enzymes.
Antidiabetic Medications:
CoQ10 may improve glycemic control in some type II diabetics, potentially necessitating dose adjustments of antidiabetic medications.
Doxorubicin:
CoQ10 may help ameliorate the cardiotoxicity of doxorubicin.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Coenzyme Q10 or any component of the formulation.
Scheduled surgery within the next two weeks.
Side Effects:
Common:
Stomach upset, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
Less Common:
Allergic skin rashes.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Coenzyme Q10 should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings:
Coenzyme Q10 may lower blood sugar levels; caution is advised in individuals with diabetes or hypoglycemia.
Coenzyme Q10 may decrease blood pressure; caution is advised in individuals with low blood pressure or those on blood pressure medications.
