AZOMAC 500 MG is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:
Upper and lower respiratory tract infections (e.g., pharyngitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia)
Skin and soft tissue infections
Otitis media (middle ear infection)
Urethritis and cervicitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis
Certain gastrointestinal infections such as traveler's diarrhea caused by E. coli
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms, thereby inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It has a long half-life and excellent tissue penetration, which allows for once-daily dosing and shorter treatment durations.
Adults (for most infections): 500 mg once daily for 3 days OR 500 mg on day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily for the next 4 days.
For STDs (e.g., chlamydia): A single dose of 1 gram (2 tablets of 500 mg).
Dosage may vary based on infection type and physician’s advice.
Take orally, preferably 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. The tablet should be swallowed whole with water. Avoid antacids within 1 hour of taking the drug.
Azithromycin may interact with:
Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium
Warfarin
Digoxin
Ergot derivatives
Cyclosporine
It may also increase the effect of other QT-prolonging drugs.
Always consult with a physician before combining it with other medications.
Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics
History of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with prior azithromycin use
Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain
Less common: Headache, dizziness, rash
Rare: Hepatotoxicity, QT prolongation, allergic reactions like angioedema or anaphylaxis
Azithromycin is classified as Pregnancy Category B.
It should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.
Small amounts may pass into breast milk, but it is generally considered safe. Consult a physician before use.
