Indications:
SECOCLAV 500 is indicated for treating respiratory tract infections (e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, sinusitis, otitis media, bone and joint infections, and dental infections caused by β-lactamase-producing bacteria.

Pharmacology:
Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic that inhibits the biosynthesis of bacterial cell walls, leading to lysis and death of the bacteria. Clavulanic Acid is a β-lactamase inhibitor that inactivates β-lactamase enzymes produced by resistant bacteria, thus restoring Amoxicillin’s efficacy.

Dosage:

Adults and children over 12 years: Typically one SECOCLAV 500 mg tablet every 8–12 hours or as directed by the physician.
Dosage may vary based on infection severity and site.

Administration:
Should be taken with food to enhance absorption and reduce gastrointestinal side effects. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush or chew. Complete the full course even if symptoms improve earlier.

Interaction:
May interact with oral anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), methotrexate (increased toxicity), and oral contraceptives (reduced efficacy). Probenecid may increase blood levels of Amoxicillin.

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to penicillins or β-lactam antibiotics
History of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction related to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid
Severe renal impairment (dose adjustment required)

Side Effects:

Common: Nausea, diarrhea, indigestion, skin rash
Less common: Hepatitis, liver enzyme elevation, pseudomembranous colitis, allergic reactions including anaphylaxis
Seek immediate medical attention for serious or persistent adverse effects.

Pregnancy & Lactation:
Considered relatively safe in pregnancy (Category B) and during breastfeeding. Should be used only if clearly needed and under physician supervision.
