Gentob 3GM is indicated for the treatment of external bacterial infections of the eye caused by susceptible organisms, including:
Gram-positive bacteria:
Staphylococcus aureus
Staphylococcus epidermidis
Streptococcus pneumoniae
Streptococcus spp. of group A beta-hemolytic and some nonhemolytic species
Gram-negative bacteria:
E. coli
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Enterobacter aerogenes
Klebsiella spp.
Proteus mirabilis
Proteus vulgaris
Haemophilus influenzae
Morganella morganii
Acinetobacter calcoaceticus
Providentia
Serratia
Salmonella spp.
Some strains of Neisseria
Pharmacology:
Gentob 3GM contains Gentamicin Sulfate, an aminoglycoside antibiotic. It exerts its bactericidal effect by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, inhibiting protein synthesis and causing misreading of the genetic code, leading to bacterial cell death.
Dosage:
Adults:
Mild to moderate infections: Apply a small amount (approximately a half-inch ribbon) into the conjunctival sac(s) 2-3 times daily.
Severe infections: Apply a small amount into the conjunctival sac(s) every 3-4 hours until improvement is observed, then reduce the frequency gradually.
Children (1 year and older):
Mild to moderate infections: Apply a small amount into the conjunctival sac(s) 2-3 times daily.
Severe infections: Apply a small amount into the conjunctival sac(s) every 3-4 hours until improvement is observed, then reduce the frequency gradually.
Administration:
Before applying, wash your hands thoroughly. Tilt your head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Squeeze a small amount of ointment (approximately a half-inch ribbon) into the conjunctival sac. Close your eye and roll it around to spread the medication evenly. Avoid touching the tip of the tube to any surface to prevent contamination.
Interaction:
Use with caution in patients receiving other drugs with neuromuscular blocking agents or ototoxic medications. Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms and fungi.
Contraindications:
Gentob 3GM is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to Gentamicin or any component of the formulation.
Side Effects:
Localized ocular toxicity
Conjunctival erythema
Hypersensitivity reactions including lid itching and swelling
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy Category C. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. This drug should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Gentamicin may be excreted into human milk. A decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug.
Therapeutic Class:
Ophthalmic antibacterial drugs
Storage Conditions:
Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C. Keep out of reach of children. Use within 4 weeks after first opening.
