Indications:
Treatment of schizophrenia in patients who are resistant to or intolerant of other antipsychotic drugs.
Pharmacology:
Clozapine is an atypical antipsychotic that acts by blocking dopamine and serotonin receptors, restoring neurotransmitter balance in the brain.
Dosage:
Starting dose typically 12.5 mg once or twice daily, gradually increased as per physician’s instructions; XR formulation given once daily. Dose up to 300 mg or as prescribed.
Administration:
Oral administration, once daily, preferably at the same time each day.
Interaction:
May interact with CNS depressants, other antipsychotics, and drugs affecting cytochrome P450 enzymes. Avoid alcohol.
Contraindications:
History of agranulocytosis or severe bone marrow suppression; hypersensitivity to clozapine.
Side Effects:
Drowsiness, dizziness, weight gain, hypersalivation, risk of agranulocytosis (requires blood monitoring).
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if benefits outweigh risks; consult healthcare provider before use.
