Indications:
PROVAL CR 200 mg is indicated for:
Treatment of epilepsy, including partial seizures, absence seizures, and generalized tonic-clonic seizures.
Management of manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder.
Prophylaxis of migraine headaches.
Pharmacology:
Sodium Valproate is an anticonvulsant that works by increasing the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, inhibiting abnormal electrical activity and stabilizing neuronal membranes.
Dosage:
Epilepsy: Initial dose of 10–15 mg/kg/day, increasing gradually to 60 mg/kg/day.
Bipolar Disorder: Typically 750 mg/day, adjusted based on clinical response.
Migraine Prophylaxis: 250 mg twice daily, adjusted as needed.
Administration:
Take orally with or without food, at the same time each day. Swallow tablets whole; do not chew or crush.
Interaction:
May interact with other anticonvulsants (e.g., phenytoin, carbamazepine), anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), and certain antidepressants. Monitor for potential interactions and adjust dosages accordingly.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Sodium Valproate or any component of the formulation.
Severe liver dysfunction.
Urea cycle disorders.
Mitochondrial disorders.
Side Effects:
Common: Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, tremors, weight gain, hair loss.
Less Common: Abdominal pain, diarrhea, blurred vision, rash, increased appetite.
Serious: Hepatic dysfunction, pancreatitis, thrombocytopenia, hyperammonemia.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy: Contraindicated, especially during the first trimester, due to potential teratogenic effects.
Lactation: Not recommended; excreted in breast milk and may affect the nursing infant.
