Supplement for inadequate calcium intake in childhood diet, rickets, pregnancy & lactation, elderly patients
Other indications include pancreatitis, phosphate binder in chronic renal failure
Pharmacology:
Calcium Carbonate (Coral source): Provides elemental calcium, essential for bone formation and maintenance.
Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol): Enhances calcium absorption from the gastrointestinal tract and aids in maintaining calcium balance in the body.
Dosage & Administration:
Adult Dose: One tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water, preferably with food for better absorption.
Pediatric Dose: Consult a pediatrician before use.
Administration:
Take the tablet orally with a full glass of water.
Ensure to follow the prescribed dosage and administration instructions provided by the healthcare provider.
Interaction:
Tetracycline antibiotics: Calcium can reduce the absorption of tetracyclines; administer at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after calcium.
Thiazide diuretics: May reduce renal excretion of calcium; monitor serum calcium levels.
Phenytoin, barbiturates, glucocorticoids: May induce metabolism of vitamin D3; dosage adjustments may be necessary.
Foods high in oxalic acid (e.g., spinach) or phytic acid (e.g., whole cereals): May inhibit calcium absorption; avoid concurrent intake
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation
Hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism
Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis
Severe renal insufficiency
Concomitant digoxin therapy (requires careful monitoring of serum calcium levels)
Side Effects:
Common: Constipation, flatulence, nausea, vomiting
Serious: Hypercalcemia, arrhythmias, confusion, muscle weakness
Others: Dry mouth, metallic taste, headache, dizziness
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy: Use only if clearly needed and prescribed by a healthcare provider.
Lactation: Distributed in human breast milk; use with caution during breastfeeding
