Indications:
Betacor is indicated for:
Management of hypertension
Treatment of stable chronic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction
Prevention of angina pectoris (chest pain)
Pharmacology:
Bisoprolol is a selective beta-1 adrenergic receptor blocker. It reduces heart rate and cardiac output by inhibiting sympathetic stimulation. This leads to decreased myocardial oxygen demand and lower blood pressure. Being cardioselective, it primarily affects the heart and has minimal effect on beta-2 receptors in the lungs.
Dosage & Administration:
Hypertension or angina: 5 mg once daily, may be increased up to 10 mg if needed
Chronic heart failure: Start at 1.25 mg daily, titrate slowly based on tolerance
Should be taken in the morning, with or without food
Swallow the tablet whole with water
Interaction:
May enhance the effects of other antihypertensive agents
Use cautiously with calcium channel blockers (verapamil, diltiazem) due to risk of heart block
May mask symptoms of hypoglycemia in diabetic patients
Interacts with digoxin, insulin, and some anesthetics
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Bisoprolol
Acute heart failure or cardiogenic shock
Severe bradycardia or hypotension
Second- or third-degree AV block without a pacemaker
Side Effects:
Common: Fatigue, dizziness, bradycardia, cold extremities, headache
Rare: Depression, sleep disturbances, bronchospasm in sensitive individuals
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. May affect fetal growth. Caution is advised during lactation, as small amounts may pass into breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings:
Do not discontinue abruptly; taper off gradually
Use with caution in patients with asthma, diabetes, liver or kidney dysfunction
Monitor heart rate, blood pressure, and ECG regularly
Therapeutic Class:
Selective beta-1 adrenergic receptor blockers (Cardioselective beta-blockers)
Storage Conditions:
Store below 30°C, in a dry place away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
