Gavisol is an over-the-counter antacid medication used to relieve symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn, indigestion, and acid reflux. It contains a combination of sodium alginate, sodium bicarbonate, and calcium carbonate. Upon ingestion, Gavisol reacts with gastric acid to form a gel-like raft that floats on top of the stomach contents, effectively preventing acid from refluxing into the esophagus. This physical barrier provides relief from heartburn and indigestion symptoms for up to four hours. Gavisol is typically taken after meals and at bedtime.
