Description
Obecol 5 mg is a pharmaceutical preparation containing Obeticholic Acid, a potent agonist of the Farnesoid X Receptor (FXR). This receptor plays a pivotal role in regulating bile acid synthesis, transport, and overall liver function. Obecol is primarily indicated for the treatment of Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC), a chronic liver disease characterized by progressive destruction of the bile ducts. The 5 mg dosage is typically administered once daily for the initial three months. If patients do not achieve adequate biochemical response, the dosage may be increased to 10 mg daily, provided the medication is well-tolerated. In patients with advanced liver disease, such as compensated cirrhosis without evidence of portal hypertension, Obecol should be used cautiously, with careful monitoring for signs of hepatic decompensation. Common side effects include pruritus (itching), fatigue, and elevated liver enzymes. Patients are advised to undergo regular monitoring during treatment to assess efficacy and detect any potential adverse effects.
