Pharmacology:
PEGALIN ER (extended-release) contains pregabalin, which acts on the central nervous system to reduce the release of certain neurotransmitters responsible for transmitting pain and anxiety signals. It helps in alleviating neuropathic pain, reducing the frequency of seizures, and managing anxiety symptoms. The extended-release formulation provides continuous relief throughout the day by gradually releasing the active ingredient into the bloodstream.
Dosage:
For neuropathic pain: The usual starting dose is 330 mg once daily, and this may be adjusted according to the individual’s response and doctor’s recommendations.
For generalized anxiety disorder (GAD): The recommended dose is 330 mg once daily, with potential adjustments based on the patient's needs.
For seizure adjunct: The dosage should be individualized, and adjustments are based on the patient's condition.
Administration:
PEGALIN ER 330 MG should be taken orally once a day, at the same time each day, with or without food. The tablet should be swallowed whole and should not be broken or chewed. The healthcare provider will determine the exact dosage and frequency based on the individual patient's needs.
Interaction:
PEGALIN ER may enhance the sedative effects of other CNS depressants like alcohol, benzodiazepines, or opiates.
It can also interact with other medications, particularly those used to treat seizures or mood disorders, so it is essential to inform the doctor of all concurrent medications.
Contraindications:
PEGALIN ER is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to pregabalin or any of its ingredients.
Not recommended for individuals with severe renal impairment unless specific dose adjustments are made.
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, and weight gain.
Serious side effects can include swelling of the legs, feet, or hands, difficulty breathing, or mood changes. Seek immediate medical attention if these symptoms occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy: PEGALIN ER should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks to the fetus.
Lactation: PEGALIN ER passes into breast milk in small amounts. It should be used with caution during breastfeeding, only if the benefits outweigh the risks.
Precautions & Warnings:
Use PEGALIN ER cautiously in patients with kidney disease, as dose adjustments may be necessary.
Discontinuation of PEGALIN ER should be gradual to avoid withdrawal symptoms or a potential increase in seizure frequency.
Regular monitoring for side effects such as weight gain and fluid retention is advised.
Therapeutic Class:
Anticonvulsants, Anxiolytics
