Pharmacology:
PROGUT 20 MG contains omeprazole, which works by inhibiting the proton pump in the stomach lining. The proton pump is responsible for producing hydrochloric acid, which is essential for digestion. By inhibiting this pump, omeprazole decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach, helping to alleviate the symptoms of heartburn, GERD, and ulcers. This medication also promotes healing of the lining of the stomach and esophagus.
Dosage:
For GERD and stomach ulcers: The usual dose of PROGUT 20 MG is one tablet per day for 4-8 weeks, depending on the condition and doctor's recommendation.
For Helicobacter pylori eradication, it may be prescribed with antibiotics, typically taken for 10-14 days.
The exact dosage and duration of treatment should be determined by a healthcare provider based on the patient's specific condition.
Administration:
PROGUT 20 MG should be taken orally, usually once a day. The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, preferably before meals. Do not chew or crush the tablet.
Interaction:
PROGUT 20 MG may interact with medications like clopidogrel (a blood thinner), warfarin, ketoconazole, and digoxin, which may either increase or decrease the effectiveness of one or both medications.
It may also interact with antacids, vitamin B12, and certain antibiotics. Always inform your doctor of any other medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
Contraindications:
PROGUT 20 MG is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to omeprazole or any of its components.
It should not be used in individuals with severe liver disease or gastric cancer unless specifically prescribed by a doctor.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include headache, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and flatulence.
Serious side effects may include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling), liver problems (yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine), or severe abdominal pain. Contact a healthcare provider immediately if any of these occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy: PROGUT 20 MG should be used during pregnancy only if the benefits outweigh the risks. It is recommended to consult with a healthcare provider before use.
Lactation: Omeprazole is excreted in breast milk. It is recommended to consult a doctor before taking PROGUT 20 MG while breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings:
Prolonged use of PROGUT 20 MG may lead to a vitamin B12 deficiency, so periodic monitoring of B12 levels is advised.
If you experience any signs of severe allergic reactions, liver issues, or persistent abdominal pain, consult your doctor immediately.
It is important to follow the prescribed dosage and avoid self-medicating to ensure safe and effective treatment.
