Indications:
Pyrostig 60 mg is indicated for:
Treatment of Myasthenia Gravis
Reversal of the effects of non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents after surgery
Sometimes used in Ileus and Urinary Retention (off-label)
Pharmacology:
Pyrostig contains Pyridostigmine Bromide, a reversible cholinesterase inhibitor. It enhances neuromuscular transmission by preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine, thus improving communication between nerves and muscles in conditions like myasthenia gravis.Dosage:
Myasthenia Gravis: Adults usually start with 60 mg every 3 to 4 hours; dosage adjusted based on patient response.
Postoperative Reversal: Dose determined by anesthesiologist during surgery.
Maximum daily dose should not exceed 1500 mg.
Administration:
Administer orally with or without food
Swallow whole with water
Take at the same time(s) each day for best results
Interaction:
May interact with other cholinergic drugs, atropine, and corticosteroids
Potentiated effects with succinylcholine and other muscle relaxants
Antacids may reduce absorption
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to pyridostigmine or bromides
Mechanical obstruction of the intestinal or urinary tract
Side Effects:
Common:
Nausea, vomiting
Abdominal cramps, diarrhea
Increased salivation or sweating
Serious:
Bradycardia (slow heart rate)
Respiratory depression in overdose
Muscular twitching or weakness if overdosed
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Pyridostigmine is excreted in breast milk; caution advised in nursing mothers.Precautions & Warnings:
Use with caution in patients with asthma, epilepsy, or cardiac disease
Monitor for signs of overdosage (cholinergic crisis)
Do not abruptly stop taking the medication
