SPIROCARD 100 MG is primarily indicated for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), heart failure, and hyperaldosteronism. It helps reduce excess fluid in the body and controls blood pressure by blocking the action of aldosterone, a hormone that causes the kidneys to retain sodium and water. This medication also acts as a potassium-sparing diuretic, preventing excessive loss of potassium, which is essential for proper heart function.
Pharmacology:
SPIROCARD 100 MG contains Spironolactone, an aldosterone antagonist and potassium-sparing diuretic. Spironolactone works by blocking the effects of aldosterone, a hormone that causes salt and water retention, which can lead to high blood pressure and swelling in the body. It helps the body get rid of excess salt and water while retaining potassium, making it useful in treating conditions such as heart failure, hypertension, and edema associated with liver or kidney problems. By reducing fluid retention, it helps lower blood pressure and improve heart function.
Dosage:
The usual adult dose for hypertension is 50-100 mg daily, divided into one or two doses, as prescribed by your doctor.
For heart failure, the dose may vary from 12.5 mg to 100 mg daily, depending on the severity of the condition.
For hyperaldosteronism, the typical dose is 100 mg daily, but the exact dosage will be adjusted based on the patient’s condition and response to treatment.
Always follow the prescribed dosage and consult your doctor before making any changes to the medication regimen.
Administration:
Take SPIROCARD 100 MG orally, with or without food.
It is usually taken once or twice a day, depending on the doctor's instructions.
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water; do not crush or chew the tablet.
For best results, take the medication at the same time every day.
Interaction:
SPIROCARD 100 MG may interact with other medications that affect potassium levels, such as potassium supplements, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), and other potassium-sparing diuretics, increasing the risk of hyperkalemia (high potassium levels).
It can also interact with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which may reduce the effectiveness of the medication.
Always inform your healthcare provider about any other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.
Contraindications:
SPIROCARD 100 MG is contraindicated in patients with severe kidney impairment, high potassium levels (hyperkalemia), or Addison's disease.
It should not be used in patients who are allergic to Spironolactone or any of its components.
Caution is needed in patients with liver disease, as dosage adjustments may be required.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of SPIROCARD 100 MG may include dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, gastrointestinal discomfort (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), and increased urination. Serious side effects could include high potassium levels (hyperkalemia), irregular heartbeats, or severe allergic reactions. If you experience symptoms such as muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, or swelling of the face or throat, seek immediate medical attention.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy: SPIROCARD 100 MG should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor, as it may cause harm to the fetus.
Lactation: Spironolactone passes into breast milk in small amounts. It is generally not recommended for use while breastfeeding. Consult your doctor before using SPIROCARD 100 MG if you are breastfeeding.
