Indications: PATADIN MAX (Olopatadine) is indicated for the treatment of ocular itching and redness associated with allergic conjunctivitis, including seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, vernal keratoconjunctivitis, vernal keratitis, blepharitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, and giant papillary conjunctivitis. It helps relieve symptoms like itchy, watery, red, and swollen eyes and/or eyelids.

Pharmacology: Olopatadine is a relatively selective histamine H1-receptor antagonist and a mast cell stabilizer. It works by inhibiting the release of histamine from mast cells, thereby reducing the immediate hypersensitivity reaction in vivo and in vitro. It also inhibits histamine-induced effects on human conjunctival epithelial cells. Olopatadine is devoid of effects on alpha-adrenergic, dopamine, and muscarinic type 1 and 2 receptors. Following topical ocular administration, olopatadine has low systemic exposure.

Dosage:

  • 0.1% Sterile Eye Drops: One drop in each affected eye two times per day at an interval of 6 to 8 hours.
  • 0.2% Sterile Eye Drops (Patadin Max): One drop in the affected eye once a day.
  • 0.7% Sterile Eye Drops: One drop in each affected eye once a day.
  • For children, consult a doctor regarding dosage as safety and efficacy have not been established in all age groups (e.g., below 2 or 3 years depending on concentration).

Administration:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly before use.
  2. Tilt your head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
  3. Hold the dropper bottle upside down, directly over your eye.
  4. Gently squeeze the bottle to dispense one drop into the created pocket.
  5. Do not let the dropper tip touch your eye, eyelid, or any other surface to avoid contamination.
  6. Close your eye gently for 1-2 minutes without blinking to allow the medication to spread.
  7. If you are using other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between each application.
  8. Replace the cap tightly after use.

Interaction: Concomitant use with CNS depressants may result in additive CNS depression. No other significant drug interactions are known with topical ocular olopatadine.

This drug should be used in pregnant women only if the potential benefit to the mother justifies the potential risk to the fetus.Lactation: It is not known whether topical ocular administration of olopatadine could result in sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectable quantities in human breast milk.
