SULFAZIN 500 MG is indicated for the treatment of ulcerative colitis, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease, and rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disorder that causes joint inflammation. It helps reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation in both the intestines and joints.
Pharmacology:
SULFAZIN 500 MG contains sulfasalazine, a combination of sulfapyridine and 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA). In the colon, it is broken down by bacteria to release these two active components. 5-ASA acts locally to reduce inflammation in the intestinal lining, while sulfapyridine is believed to help modulate immune responses, making the drug effective in treating autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.
Dosage:
Ulcerative Colitis (Adults): Initially 1–2 g/day in divided doses, gradually increased to 2–4 g/day as needed.
Rheumatoid Arthritis: Typically starts with 500 mg/day, increased to 2–3 g/day in divided doses.
