Obecol 10 mg is a medication containing Obeticholic Acid, a Farnesoid X Receptor (FXR) agonist used primarily for the treatment of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) in adults. It is indicated for patients who have not responded adequately to Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UDCA) therapy or are intolerant to UDCA. Obecol works by activating FXR, a nuclear receptor that regulates bile acid synthesis and transport, thereby reducing liver inflammation and damage associated with PBC. The recommended starting dose is 5 mg once daily, which may be increased to 10 mg once daily after 3 months if the patient tolerates the medication and requires further therapeutic effect. Common side effects include pruritus (itching), fatigue, abdominal pain, and elevated liver enzymes. Patients should be monitored for signs of liver dysfunction during treatment. Obecol is contraindicated in patients with complete biliary obstruction and should be used with caution in those with liver impairment
