Indications:
Immunization against tetanus
Routine childhood immunization
Booster dose for adults
Pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis in wounds prone to tetanus
Pharmacology:
Tetanus Toxoid is a purified and inactivated form of the tetanus toxin. It stimulates the body’s immune system to produce antibodies against tetanus bacteria (Clostridium tetani), providing protection without causing the disease.
Dosage:
Children: As part of routine immunization schedule (usually DPT combination).
Adults: Initial 3-dose schedule followed by booster every 10 years.
Wound management: Single dose if prior vaccination was more than 5 years ago.
Administration:
Administered intramuscularly, usually in the deltoid or thigh muscle.
Shake well before use. Use a sterile syringe and needle.
Interaction:
Can be given with other vaccines (e.g., DTP, hepatitis B) at separate sites.
Immunosuppressive therapy may reduce effectiveness.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine
Acute febrile illness or severe infection at the time of vaccination
Side Effects:
Common:
Pain, redness, or swelling at injection site
Mild fever
Fatigue
Rare:
Allergic reaction
Neurological reactions (extremely rare)
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Safe during pregnancy; especially important in the third trimester to protect newborn from neonatal tetanus
Can be given during lactation
Precautions & Warnings:
Delay vaccination in cases of acute illness or infection
Use with caution in individuals with bleeding disorders
Keep epinephrine available for allergic reactions
