VAPTAN 15 MG is primarily used for the treatment of:
Hyponatremia (low sodium levels in the blood): VAPTAN is used to correct sodium imbalances, particularly in patients with conditions like heart failure, syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH), and other causes of low sodium.
Heart Failure: In heart failure, the medication helps reduce fluid retention and improve heart function by balancing fluid and sodium levels.
VAPTAN 15 MG contains Tolvaptan, a selective vasopressin V2 receptor antagonist. It works by blocking the action of vasopressin (also called antidiuretic hormone), which normally helps the kidneys retain water. By blocking vasopressin, Tolvaptan increases water excretion without causing sodium loss, helping to restore normal sodium levels and reduce fluid retention in conditions like heart failure or SIADH.
The typical dose of VAPTAN 15 MG depends on the specific condition being treated:
Hyponatremia (low sodium levels): Initial dose may start at 15 mg once daily, and based on the patient's response, the dose may be adjusted.
Heart Failure: The dose is typically started at 15 mg daily, and may be increased to 30 mg once daily if necessary.
Always follow your doctor’s prescription for dose adjustments.
Take VAPTAN 15 MG orally with or without food.
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Take at the same time each day to maintain consistent blood levels of the medication.
VAPTAN 15 MG may interact with medications that affect electrolyte balance, such as diuretics and ACE inhibitors, which can lead to further imbalances.
CYP3A4 inhibitors (like ketoconazole, erythromycin) may increase the levels of Tolvaptan in your blood, so caution should be exercised.
Always inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.
Severe liver disease: VAPTAN 15 MG should not be used in patients with severe liver impairment or cirrhosis.
Hypersensitivity: Do not take if you are allergic to Tolvaptan or any other ingredients in the medication.
Pregnancy and lactation: Not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless the potential benefit justifies the potential risk. Consult with your healthcare provider.
Common side effects include:
Thirst, dry mouth, or increased urination
Dizziness, headache, or nausea
Elevated liver enzymes (in rare cases)
Serious side effects may include:
Liver damage: Symptoms include yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, or unexplained fatigue.
Electrolyte imbalance: Watch for symptoms of low sodium (confusion, seizures, muscle weakness) or high sodium (thirst, confusion).
If any of these serious side effects occur, seek immediate medical attention.
Pregnancy: VAPTAN 15 MG should not be used during pregnancy unless clearly necessary, as it could harm the fetus.
Lactation: It is not known whether Tolvaptan is excreted in breast milk. It is generally advised to avoid breastfeeding while taking this medication.
