Indications:
Laxopride is indicated for the treatment of functional dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and other gastrointestinal motility disorders.
Pharmacology:
Laxopride contains Levosulpiride, a substituted benzamide antipsychotic agent with prokinetic properties. It selectively blocks dopamine D2 receptors in the gastrointestinal tract, enhancing acetylcholine release, thereby promoting gastrointestinal motility and reducing visceral sensitivity.
Dosage & Administration:
Usual adult dose: 25–75 mg daily in divided doses depending on severity and clinical response.
In some cases, 2 mg tablets may be used for dose titration or in elderly patients.
To be taken before meals.
Dosage should be individualized under physician supervision.
Interaction:
May interact with anticholinergic drugs, levodopa (reduced effect), and alcohol (additive CNS depression). Use caution when used with other antipsychotics or serotonergic agents.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with epilepsy, manic states, pheochromocytoma, prolactin-dependent tumors, or known hypersensitivity to Levosulpiride.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, weight gain, gynecomastia, galactorrhea, menstrual irregularities, and restlessness. Long-term use may cause extrapyramidal symptoms.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Should be avoided during pregnancy unless clearly necessary. Not recommended during breastfeeding due to possible excretion in breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings:
Use with caution in elderly patients and those with renal or hepatic impairment. Monitor for signs of depression or extrapyramidal symptoms.
Therapeutic Class:
Gastroprokinetic agents; atypical antipsychotics (benzamide group).
Storage Conditions:
Store in a cool and dry place, below 25°C. Keep away from light, moisture, and children.
