Pharmacology:
PROGEST 10 MG contains progesterone, a natural hormone involved in the regulation of the menstrual cycle and maintaining pregnancy. In women, progesterone prepares the uterine lining for pregnancy, and if pregnancy does not occur, progesterone levels drop, leading to menstruation.
In synthetic form, it helps correct hormone imbalances, supports pregnancy, and treats symptoms related to menopause. It also acts to counterbalance the effects of estrogen in hormone replacement therapy, preventing overgrowth of the uterine lining.
Dosage:
For menstrual irregularities or HRT: The typical dosage is 10 mg once daily, usually taken for 10 to 12 days in a cycle.
For supporting pregnancy: The dose may vary depending on the specific situation and doctor's recommendation.
The exact dosage and duration should be determined by a healthcare provider based on the individual needs and medical condition of the patient.
Administration:
PROGEST 10 MG should be taken orally, with or without food. It is usually taken at the same time each day. The tablet should be swallowed whole, without chewing or breaking.
Interaction:
PROGEST 10 MG may interact with certain medications such as anticonvulsants (e.g., phenytoin), barbiturates, and rifampin, which can decrease the effectiveness of progesterone.
It may also interact with anticoagulants, insulin, and other hormone-related therapies. Always inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking.
Contraindications:
PROGEST 10 MG should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to progesterone or any of the tablet’s ingredients.
It is contraindicated in women with undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, severe liver disease, breast cancer, or estrogen-dependent cancers.
Caution is advised in patients with history of blood clots, heart disease, or liver disorders.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include headache, dizziness, breast tenderness, mood changes, fatigue, and bloating.
Serious side effects may include severe abdominal pain, chest pain, unusual vaginal bleeding, or leg swelling. If any of these occur, seek medical attention immediately.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy: PROGEST 10 MG is generally safe to use during pregnancy for maintaining early pregnancy. However, always consult with your healthcare provider before use.
Lactation: It is unknown whether progesterone passes into breast milk in significant amounts. Use with caution during breastfeeding and only if necessary.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitoring: Periodic check-ups may be required to monitor the effectiveness and any side effects, especially if you have a history of liver disease, blood clotting disorders, or cardiovascular disease.
Dizziness and Drowsiness: If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid activities that require full alertness, such as driving or operating machinery.
Cancer Risks: Long-term use of hormone replacement therapy has been associated with a slight increase in certain cancers, including breast cancer and endometrial cancer. Discuss risks with your doctor.
