Upper and lower respiratory tract infections
Otitis media
Sinusitis
Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Skin and soft tissue infections
Bone and joint infections
Pharmacology:
Cefuroxime: A second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with bactericidal action by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.
Clavulanic Acid: A β-lactamase inhibitor that protects cefuroxime from degradation by β-lactamase enzymes, thereby extending its spectrum.
Dosage & Administration:
Adults: 250–500 mg twice daily depending on infection severity
Should be taken with food to enhance absorption
Swallow whole with water, do not crush or chew
Interaction:
Probenecid may increase Cefuroxime levels
May interfere with oral contraceptives
Use with caution in patients on anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin)
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or penicillins
History of severe allergic reactions to β-lactam antibiotics
Side Effects:

Serious (rare): Anaphylaxis, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Generally safe in pregnancy (Category B); however, use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk—use with caution during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings:
Evaluate patient history for hypersensitivity reactions
Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
Renal function monitoring recommended in long-term use or high doses
Therapeutic Class:
β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitor combination (Cephalosporin + Clavulanic acid)
Storage Conditions:
Store below 25°C in a dry place away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
