Indications:
ESIPRAM 5 mg is indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder.
Pharmacology:
Escitalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that increases serotonin levels in the brain by inhibiting its reuptake into presynaptic cells, improving mood and anxiety symptoms.
Dosage:
Initial dose: 5 mg once daily, may be increased to 10 mg daily based on clinical response.
Dose adjustments should be made cautiously and under physician supervision.
Administration:
Orally once daily, with or without food, preferably at the same time each day for optimal effect.
Interaction:
May interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), other SSRIs, anticoagulants, NSAIDs, and certain herbal supplements like St. John’s Wort. Increased risk of serotonin syndrome if combined improperly.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients taking MAOIs or with known hypersensitivity to Escitalopram.
Side Effects:
Common: Nausea, headache, insomnia, dizziness, dry mouth, sexual dysfunction.
Serious: Serotonin syndrome, suicidal thoughts, QT prolongation (rare).
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use during pregnancy only if benefits outweigh risks. Caution advised during lactation.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor for worsening depression or suicidal thoughts, especially in young adults. Avoid abrupt discontinuation. Use cautiously in patients with hepatic or renal impairment.
