Zapenia 100 mg Tablet is an atypical antipsychotic medication manufactured by Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd., containing Clozapine as its active ingredient. Clozapine is a dibenzodiazepine derivative that acts as an antagonist at multiple neurotransmitter receptors, including dopamine D1, D2, D3, D4, and D5 receptors, as well as serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. This broad receptor profile contributes to its efficacy in treating various psychiatric conditions.
Zapenia is primarily indicated for:
Schizophrenia in patients who are unresponsive to or intolerant of conventional antipsychotic drugs.
Psychosis associated with Parkinson's disease.
The recommended dosage varies based on the condition being treated and the patient's response to therapy. For schizophrenia, treatment typically begins with 12.5 mg once or twice daily, gradually increasing to a target dose of 300 mg daily within 14-21 days. For Parkinson's disease-related psychosis, the starting dose is usually 12.5 mg at bedtime, with gradual increases up to a maximum of 100 mg daily.
Common side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, increased salivation, nausea, and weight gain. Serious side effects can occur, such as agranulocytosis, myocarditis, and seizures; therefore, regular monitoring of white blood cell counts is essential during treatment. Zapenia should be used with caution in elderly patients and those with a history of seizures, cardiovascular disease, or liver impairment.
