Description
Secnizol DS 1 gm Tablet contains Secnidazole, a second-generation nitroimidazole antimicrobial agent developed by Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd. . It is indicated for the treatment of various protozoal infections, including intestinal amoebiasis, hepatic amoebiasis, urethritis and vaginitis due to Trichomonas vaginalis, and giardiasis . Secnidazole is rapidly absorbed following oral administration, reaching maximum serum levels within 3 hours. Its plasma half-life is approximately 20 hours, allowing for sustained therapeutic levels with a single 2 gm dose, which is effective for up to 72 hours . The drug is primarily excreted through urine. Common side effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances, nausea, epigastric pain, metallic taste, glossitis, and stomatitis. It is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to imidazole derivatives and should be used with caution in those with a history of blood dyscrasias. Secnidazole should not be taken with alcohol due to the risk of disulfiram-like reactions. During pregnancy, it is recommended to avoid use during the first trimester, and caution is advised during lactation . Secnizol DS 1 gm Tablet is typically administered as a single dose, preferably just before meals, to improve patient compliance due to its short treatment duration. It is advisable to store the medication in a cool, dry place, protected from light.
