Indications:
VALEX CR is indicated for:
Treatment of herpes zoster (shingles)
Management of genital herpes simplex virus infections
Treatment of recurrent cold sores (herpes labialis)
Prevention of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in transplant patients (off-label use)
Pharmacology:
Valacyclovir is a prodrug of acyclovir, a nucleoside analogue that inhibits viral DNA synthesis, thereby preventing viral replication.
Dosage & Administration:
Typical dose for herpes zoster: 1000 mg three times daily for 7 days
For genital herpes: 500 mg twice daily for 3–5 days or as prescribed
Swallow tablets whole with water; take with or without food
Interaction:
May interact with other nephrotoxic drugs
Caution with probenecid or cimetidine which increase valacyclovir levels
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to valacyclovir or acyclovir
Severe renal impairment without dose adjustment
Side Effects:
Common: Headache, nausea, abdominal pain
Rare: Renal dysfunction, allergic reactions, confusion (especially in elderly)
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor
Limited data; consult physician before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings:
Adequate hydration recommended to prevent renal toxicity
Dose adjustment required in renal impairment
Monitor for neurological symptoms in elderly or renal patients
