Indications:
Mecolagin is indicated for the treatment of Vitamin B12 deficiency, peripheral neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy, and as a neuroprotective agent. Also used in conditions with nerve damage or degeneration.
Pharmacology:
Methylcobalamin is an active form of Vitamin B12 that plays a vital role in nerve regeneration, red blood cell production, and DNA synthesis. It enhances protein synthesis and helps in the repair of damaged neurons.
Dosage & Administration:
The usual dose is one chewable tablet daily or as directed by a physician. Can be chewed or allowed to dissolve in the mouth. Best taken after meals.
Interaction:
Chloramphenicol and alcohol may reduce the effect of Methylcobalamin. Long-term use of proton pump inhibitors or metformin may reduce B12 absorption.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Methylcobalamin or any component of the tablet.
Side Effects:
Generally well tolerated. Rarely may cause mild gastrointestinal upset, rash, or dizziness.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Considered safe during pregnancy and lactation when used under medical supervision. Vitamin B12 is essential for fetal neurological development.
Precautions & Warnings:
Should be used with caution in patients with Leber's disease (hereditary optic neuropathy). Do not exceed the recommended dose.
