Description
Ximeprox 20 mg/ml Oral Drops is a pediatric antibiotic formulation manufactured by Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd., containing Cefpodoxime Proxetil as its active ingredient. This third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic is effective against a broad spectrum of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, making it suitable for treating various bacterial infections in infants and young children.
The oral drops are commonly prescribed for conditions such as acute otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, acute maxillary sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, and enteric fever. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to the death of the bacteria causing the infection.
The recommended dosage varies based on the child's age and weight. For instance, children aged 15 days to 6 months may receive 4 mg/kg every 12 hours, while those over 9 years old may be prescribed 100 mg every 12 hours. The oral drops should be administered orally with food to enhance absorption.
Common side effects may include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, headache, and skin rash. It is essential to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed to prevent the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
