Osartil is indicated for the treatment of essential hypertension, heart failure, and to protect kidneys in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and proteinuria.
Pharmacology:
Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist (ARB). It blocks the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II, thereby lowering blood pressure and improving blood flow.
Dosage & Administration:
The usual starting dose is 50 mg once daily. The dose may be adjusted based on blood pressure response. It can be taken with or without food.
Interaction:
May interact with potassium-sparing diuretics, NSAIDs, lithium, and other antihypertensive agents.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to Losartan or any component of the formulation. Not recommended during pregnancy.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include dizziness, fatigue, and low blood pressure. Rarely, hyperkalemia and kidney dysfunction may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Losartan should not be used during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters. Use in lactation should be avoided unless prescribed by a physician.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor renal function and potassium levels during therapy. Use with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment.
Therapeutic Class:
Angiotensin-II receptor blockers (ARBs)
