Description
Osartil 100 mg is a prescription medication manufactured by Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd., containing 100 mg of losartan potassium, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It is primarily used to manage hypertension (high blood pressure) in adults and children aged 6 to 18 years, either alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents. Additionally, Osartil 100 mg is indicated for the treatment of chronic heart failure, particularly in patients who are intolerant to ACE inhibitors, and for reducing the risk of stroke in hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy. It also offers renal protection in hypertensive type 2 diabetic patients with proteinuria, helping to delay the progression of kidney disease. The medication works by selectively blocking the AT1 receptor, thereby inhibiting the vasoconstrictive and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II, leading to vasodilation and reduced blood pressure. The typical starting dose is 50 mg once daily, which may be adjusted up to 100 mg daily based on the patient's response. Common side effects include dizziness, hypotension, hyperkalemia, and elevated blood urea levels. Osartil 100 mg should be used under medical supervision, with caution in patients with renal impairment or those taking potassium-sparing diuretics or supplements. It is contraindicated during pregnancy due to potential fetal toxicity.
