Paracetamol is a widely used over-the-counter medication primarily for relieving mild to moderate pain and reducing fever. It works by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, chemicals in the body that promote inflammation, pain, and fever. It is commonly used to treat headaches, muscle aches, toothaches, and colds, as well as to manage symptoms of arthritis. Unlike nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), paracetamol does not have significant anti-inflammatory effects. It is considered safe when taken at recommended doses, but an overdose can lead to severe liver damage. It is often a key ingredient in many combination cold and flu medications.
