Description
Sardopa 500 mg Tablet contains Methyldopa, a centrally acting antihypertensive agent used to manage hypertension (high blood pressure). Methyldopa is a prodrug that is metabolized in the central nervous system to α-methylnorepinephrine, which stimulates α-2 adrenergic receptors, leading to reduced sympathetic nervous system activity and lower blood pressure . It is particularly useful in certain patient populations, such as pregnant women and those with renal insufficiency . The typical starting dose is 250 mg two or three times a day, which may be adjusted based on the patient's response, with a maximum recommended daily dose of 3 grams . Common side effects include sedation, headache, and weakness, while more serious effects can involve liver dysfunction, hematologic abnormalities, and central nervous system symptoms . Methyldopa is contraindicated in patients with active hepatic disease or those receiving monoamine oxidase inhibitors . It is classified as a pregnancy category B drug and appears in breast milk; therefore, its use during pregnancy and lactation should be under medical supervision .
