Indications:
Menaril 8 mg Tablet is indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, particularly when other treatments have failed or are not suitable.
Pharmacology:
Menaril contains Thioridazine, a phenothiazine derivative antipsychotic. It exerts its effects by blocking dopamine receptors (primarily D2) in the brain, thereby reducing psychotic symptoms like delusions, hallucinations, and thought disturbances.
Dosage:
Dosage should be individualized. Initial adult dose is usually 50-100 mg/day in divided doses. Maintenance dosage may range from 200-800 mg/day. In treatment-resistant schizophrenia, higher doses may be used under specialist guidance.
Administration:
To be taken orally, with or without food. Regular dosing at the same time each day is recommended.
Interaction:
Caution when used with CNS depressants, alcohol, tricyclic antidepressants, antihypertensives, and drugs that prolong QT interval. Risk of additive CNS depression or cardiac effects.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Thioridazine, those with a history of cardiac arrhythmia, QT prolongation, or uncontrolled epilepsy.
Side Effects:
May include drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, weight gain. Rare but serious side effects include cardiac arrhythmia, tardive dyskinesia, and neuroleptic malignant syndrome.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Should be used in pregnancy only if clearly needed and under medical supervision. Not recommended during lactation as it may be excreted in breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings:
ECG monitoring is advised due to risk of QT prolongation. Use with caution in elderly patients and those with cardiovascular disease. Monitor for extrapyramidal symptoms and tardive dyskinesia.
Therapeutic Class:
Typical Antipsychotics (Phenothiazines)
Storage Conditions:
Store below 30°C in a dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
