Description

    CARBAZIN 200MG Tablet is indicated for:

    • Epilepsy, including partial seizures, generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and mixed seizures.

    • Trigeminal neuralgia (facial nerve pain).

    • Bipolar disorder for mood stabilization.

Pharmacology:
Carbamazepine stabilizes hyperexcited nerve membranes, reduces synaptic transmission, and limits the spread of seizures. It is also effective in reducing neuralgia and stabilizing mood in bipolar disorder.

Dosage and Administration:

  • Epilepsy: Start with 100-200 mg once or twice daily, gradually increasing as directed by a physician.

  • Trigeminal Neuralgia: Start with 100 mg once or twice daily, increasing gradually until pain relief is achieved.

  • Bipolar Disorder: 200-400 mg daily in divided doses, adjusted based on response.

  • Administer orally with meals to minimize gastrointestinal irritation.

Interaction:

  • May interact with other antiepileptics, reducing their effectiveness or increasing toxicity.

  • Reduces the efficacy of oral contraceptives.

  • Increases plasma levels of lithium and some antidepressants, necessitating dose adjustments.

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to carbamazepine or structurally related drugs (e.g., tricyclic antidepressants).

  • History of bone marrow suppression.

  • Concurrent use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

Side Effects:

  • Common: Dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting.

  • Rare: Blood disorders, liver dysfunction, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, or toxic epidermal necrolysis.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

  • Use only if the potential benefit outweighs the risk. Carbamazepine can cause congenital abnormalities.

  • Use cautiously during breastfeeding as it passes into breast milk.

Precautions & Warnings:

  • Monitor liver function, renal function, and complete blood counts regularly.

  • Avoid sudden discontinuation to prevent withdrawal seizures.
