Indications:
Used to reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and to increase HDL cholesterol in patients with hyperlipidemia or mixed dyslipidemia. Also indicated for prevention of cardiovascular disease.
Pharmacology:
Atorvastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) that blocks the rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis, leading to decreased cholesterol production in the liver and increased clearance of LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream.
Dosage:
Typical starting dose is 10-20 mg once daily. Dosage can be adjusted up to 80 mg daily based on patient response and lipid levels.
Administration:
Take orally once daily, with or without food. Preferably taken at the same time every day.
Interaction:
May interact with other lipid-lowering agents, certain antibiotics, antifungals, cyclosporine, and grapefruit juice, which can increase risk of side effects.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Atorvastatin or statins
Active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevated liver enzymes
Pregnancy and lactation
Side Effects:
Common: headache, muscle pain, diarrhea, nausea
Serious: myopathy, rhabdomyolysis (rare), liver enzyme abnormalities
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Contraindicated. Use effective contraception during treatment and discontinue if pregnancy occurs. Not recommended during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor liver function tests before and during therapy.
Caution in patients with renal impairment or history of muscle disorders.
Avoid excessive alcohol intake.
