Indications:
Effective against respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and some types of gastrointestinal infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
Pharmacology:
Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.
Dosage:
Typically, 250-750 mg once daily depending on infection severity and site. For most infections, 400 mg once daily for 7-14 days is common.
Administration:
Oral administration with or without food. Swallow tablets whole; do not crush or chew.
Interaction:
May interact with antacids, sucralfate, multivitamins containing iron or zinc, and other drugs reducing absorption of Levofloxacin. Also interacts with warfarin, NSAIDs.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Levofloxacin or other quinolones
History of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolones
Myasthenia gravis
Side Effects:
Nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, tendonitis, rare tendon rupture, photosensitivity reactions.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed; safety in pregnancy not well established. Excreted in breast milk; caution advised.
Precautions & Warnings:
Avoid excessive sunlight or UV exposure due to photosensitivity risk.
Monitor for tendon pain or inflammation; discontinue if occurs.
Use with caution in elderly and patients with renal impairment.
