Indications
ESORAL 20MG is indicated for:
-
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
-
Erosive esophagitis.
-
Stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori.
-
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Pharmacology
The active ingredient, Esomeprazole, is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that blocks the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system in the stomach lining, reducing acid production and promoting healing of ulcers and erosive conditions.
Dosage and Administration

GERD and Acid Reflux: 20mg daily for 4-8 weeks.

H. pylori Eradication: Combined with antibiotics as prescribed.

Administration: Take orally with water, at least 1 hour before a meal. Swallow the capsule whole; do not crush or chew.
Interaction

Reduced absorption of drugs like ketoconazole or atazanavir.

May enhance the effect of warfarin and clopidogrel.
-
Avoid combining with St. John’s Wort or rifampin.
Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Esomeprazole or other proton pump inhibitors.

Severe liver impairment without dose adjustment.
Side Effects

Common: Nausea, headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain.

Rare: Vitamin B12 deficiency with prolonged use, osteoporosis-related fractures.
Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy: Use only if the potential benefit outweighs the risk.

Lactation: Not recommended as it may pass into breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings

Long-term use may increase the risk of gastric infections like C. difficile.

Use with caution in patients with severe liver disease.

Regular monitoring is advised for patients on prolonged therapy.
